Shaman is a custom base class available on Arelith.

Introduction

Shamans are divine spellcasters who draw upon primal forces to power their spells. These forces can range from spirits, tribal deities, or even the planes themselves. Their relationship with their source can also vary widely, from either a willing bond with the source to a parasitic relationship, where the Shaman bends its source to do their bidding. While initially they may be mistaken for a druid, the Shaman lacks the druid’s bond with nature and their strict adherence to its balance. The role of a Shaman can also vary by community: some are direct leaders of a tribe or village, some are spiritual leaders, and some are simply 'wise folk' sought out for guidance. Shamans can also take the role of a healer or witch doctor for their community, both feared and respected for their magical prowess.

Class Mechanics

Requirements

Alignment restrictions: None

Spellcasting: Requires a Deity, alignment within the deity's worshipers' alignments and Piety to cast spells greater than circle 6.

Class Features

  • Hit Die: d8
  • BAB: Medium
  • Proficiencies: Simple weapons, light and medium armor, and shields
  • Saving Throws: High: Fortitude and Will; Low: Reflex
  • Skill Points: 4 + int modifier ((4 + int modifier) * 4 at 1st level)
  • Special:
  • All shaman summons will now have the ghostly visage VFX applied to them, to represent the spiritual nature of shaman magic.
  • Shamans can tend to plants and encourage their growth.
  • Languages: Sylvan at level 1 and Animal at level 6.
  • If Shaman levels are more than half of the total levels, the following applies:
  • If multiclassed into a full BAB class, the pre-epic BAB lost from not having full BAB progression is regained as soft AB. This does not increase APR.
  • Each and any multiclass now provides more synergy CL for the first 2 levels, then switches to 1/3 CL per level at the 3rd level and beyond. Different multiclass will stack for the extra 1/3 CL calculation purposes.
  • Examples:
   # 23 Shaman / 3 Barb / 4 Ranger (16 Shaman, 3 barb, 1 ranger pre-epic)
   Actual Pre-epic BAB: 16 / Soft AB: +4 / 4 APR
CL Calculation: Total of 28 (can achieve 30 w/ AD: Abjuration)
   23 shaman + 2 barb + 2 ranger = 27 base
Barb 3 and Ranger 3, 4 are 3 levels extra, so an extra CL there
   # 20 Shaman / 6 Fighter / 4 Monk (12 shaman, 4 monk, 4 fighter pre-epic)
   Actual Pre-epic BAB: 16 / Soft AB: +4 / 6 APR
CL Calculation: Total of 26 (can achieve 28 w/ AD: Abjuration)
   20 shaman + 2 Fighter + 2 Monk = 24 base
   Fighter 3 - 6 and Monk 3 - 4 are 6 levels extra, so 2 extra CL there
   # 27 Shaman / 3 Monk
   Actual Pre-epic BAB: 16 / Soft AB: +0 / 5 APR
   CL Calculation: Total of 29
   27 shaman + 2 Monk = 29 base
Monk 3 is 1 level extra, rounded down to 0 extra CL
  • 2/3 of Shaman levels add to Barbarian levels for:
  • 2/3 of Shaman levels add to Barbarian levels for Tribal path.
  • 1/3 Bard levels count towards Caster Level vs Dispel
  • Note: Only if Shaman levels are majority in character levels
  • 1/3 Shaman levels count towards Bard Song scaling
  • Note: Only if Shaman levels are majority in character levels
  • 2/3 Shaman levels count towards Ranger level progression for the following:
  • Defensive Two-Weapon Fighting
  • Archer path ranged bonus damage scaling based on effective levels
  • Woodland Stride at effective level 7 (ex. 6 shaman 3 ranger)
  • Improved Two-Weapon Fighting at effective level 9
  • Called Shot for Archer Path Rangers at effective level 9
  • Out-of-combat Movement Speed at effective level 18
  • Wilderness Map (Ranger feat) at effective level 12 (ex. 18 shaman/3 Ranger)

Spellcasting

  • Divine (spell failure from armor is not a factor)
  • Wisdom-based
  • A base wisdom score of 10 + the spell’s level is required to cast a spell
  • Bonus spells are based on modified wisdom
  • The wisdom modifier affects spell DCs
  • Spontaneous cast (no spell preparation required)
