This page lists and explains the custom Curses of Arelith.

Curses

Curses a spell effects that can apply many kinds of undesired effects to a target, there are two kinds of Curses, Standard Curses and Greater, the main difference between them is the Greater Curses are more challenging to remove.

These effects can be applied with the Bestow Curse, Greater Bestow Curse, Evil Blight, Curse Storm and Hemorrhage spells, Harbinger Class abilities and by some curses themselves.

Curse Detection & Identification

The Detect Curse spell allows the attempt to detect and identify curse effects on the target.

First the spell uses Caster Level check for detection and if the check is successful a Spellcraft check is done for identification.

Curse Removal

The main method of removal of curses is Remove Curse, but standard curses can be removed with Restoration Spell or Greater Restoration Spell as well.

Greater curses can be removed with the following effect, but with some specific details:

  • Greater Restoration or similar effects: Attempts to remove the curse using a Greater Dispelling formula, Capping CL at 23, plus Curse CL bonuses.
  • Remove Curse Attempts to remove the curse if the caster beats a Caster Level check.
  • -pray: Attempts to remove the curse, using character level as Caster level in the check.

Curse Synergies and Bonuses

Certain classes, domain, paths, spell focus, race or venerated deity modify the interaction with how the curses are detected, indentified and removed. The Greater curse also receive a +10 DC bonus for identification.

Curse Empowerment

Curses can be empowered to add an additive to the main one. This can be achieved by having Epic Spell Focus Necromancy, Harbinger Cursed Razor class/path; in some cases it might be specific class/feature combination that can empower a specific curse.

Curse Immunities

Certain curses have multiple immunities, which can vary from simple as immunity to effects or complex as class features, selected deity with proper piety balance, or even items and other effects. Whatever the reason is for the curse to fail to affect a target, the exact reason is never revealed to the caster.

Curse Of Sunstar PC Permanent; Currently not affects NPCs Spell Bestow Curse, Greater Fort A Cursed creature becomes sun sensitive (similar to some races). !Currently works only against PCs. Although they can be cursed: Drow, Derro, Gloamins, and Vampires remain unaffected (they have their own issues with the Sun).
Curse Of Black Blood Temporary In the design works, currently not possible to apply. Affects the target with lycanthropy, forcing the change and save vs maddening rage. [evil]
Curse Of The Revenancer NPC Instant; PC Permanent Spell Bestow Curse, Greater Fort On NPCs: The target is slain by a spirit. (Death Ward protects.)
On Player Characters: After being cursed, any living creature killed by the victim had a small chance to come back as a revenant and zealously hunt down mortals until it is destroyed. Permanent. Player characters also receive a -4 penalty to Saving Throws against Death Effects.
Requires Piety to cast.
NPC: Immunity to Death [evil][piety]
Curse Of Zhengyi NPC Instant; PC Permanent Spell Bestow Curse, Greater PC Fort, NPC of Surge On NPCs: The target is affected by a random blood arcana surge. (saving throw depends on the rolled surge curse).
On PCs: Increases blood surge chance (allows it to affect all subjects). Applies -4 Penalty to Saving Throws against Curse Effects (Will save negates).

Secondary (only affects PCs): 25% chance on finished rest for Nightmares to materialize and claw at the victim. - Permanent
Although Immunity to Sleep will stop initial Curse of Nightmare element, it does not protect against against being haunted by manifested Nightmares.
