* '''Soft Ability Score Modifier''': By convention, a '''Soft''' check examines the enhanced ability score modifier. This is the base ability score modifier (what you see when you examine the character on the character selection screen prior to logging into the server with that character) plus all ability score modifier enhancements added by items, spells, abilities. On Arelith the soft ability score is capped at +12 over the base ability score, which in turn caps the soft ability score modifier at +6 over the base ability score modifier.
'''Hard''': This refers to the non-enhanced ability points and skill ranks. In other words, the natural ability of a character. Hard points are gained through:
*Character creation points.
*Ability point gained every 4 levels.
*Skill ranks.
*Feats.

* '''Hard Ability Score Modifier''': By convention, a '''Hard''' check examines the unenhanced ability score modifier.  This is the base ability score modifier (what you see when you examine the character on the character selection screen prior to logging into the server with that character).

* '''Soft''': This refers to points that are considered 'bonus' over the natural skill ranks and ability score. Ability scores have a cap of 12 soft points. Skills have a cap of 50 soft points. Soft points are gained from:
*Spells, such as Good Hope and Bull's Strength
*Abilities, such as the Bard Song or Barbarian Rage.
*Equipment.
*Skills gain soft bonus points derived from their modifier - such as modifier of intelligence granting +1 to Appraise.

Within Arelith a variety of pre-requisites and conditions have dependencies on ability scores and, more importantly, ability score modifiers.

This is further subcategorized into 2 types of "checks", depending on how that particular condition is being managed.

Hard: This refers to the non-enhanced ability points and skill ranks. In other words, the natural ability of a character. Hard points are gained through:

  • Character creation points.
  • Ability point gained every 4 levels.
  • Skill ranks.
  • Feats.

  • Soft: This refers to points that are considered 'bonus' over the natural skill ranks and ability score. Ability scores have a cap of 12 soft points. Skills have a cap of 50 soft points. Soft points are gained from:
  • Spells, such as Good Hope and Bull's Strength
  • Abilities, such as the Bard Song or Barbarian Rage.
  • Equipment.
  • Skills gain soft bonus points derived from their modifier - such as modifier of intelligence granting +1 to Appraise.

Note: It is important to understand the difference in these terms as they are widely used across many of your characters more power skills and abilities.
