Within Arelith a variety of pre-requisites and conditions have dependencies on ability scores and, more importantly, ability score modifiers.
This is further subcategorized into 2 types of "checks", depending on how that particular condition is being managed.
- Soft Ability Score Modifier: By convention, a Soft check examines the enhanced ability score modifier. This is the base ability score modifier (what you see when you examine the character on the character selection screen prior to logging into the server with that character) plus all ability score modifier enhancements added by items, spells, abilities. On Arelith the soft ability score is capped at +12 over the base ability score, which in turn caps the ability score modifier at +6 over the base modifier.
- Hard Ability Score Modifier: By convention, a Hard check examines the unenhanced ability score modifier. This is the base ability score modifier (what you see when you examine the character on the character selection screen prior to logging into the server with that character).
Note: It is important to understand the difference in these terms as they are widely used across many of your characters more power skills and abilities.
