Crash is situation when player gets disconnected from server. Sometimes there is a heavy lag announcing it.

It is recommended to use -save command for preventing heavy losses in case of crash occurring after for example acquiring some significant amount of gold or rare item.

There is separate article about refunds and gains from crashes on Arelith.

Types of crashes

written by Chris

Players can experience four different 'main' types of crashes:

Client Crash

Problem that happens due to client computer crashing, either the computer or Neverwinter Nights itself. As a result, the players character stays online until the Arelith server boots the player as a result of timeout (duration of time, around 30-60 seconds after which server eliminates player and their character from playerlist). Player is not thrown off instantly because the player may experience temporary timeout problems.

Client crashes are bad because the character stays online for a while and can be affected by monsters assaulting the character for example, this may result in the player logging in death area when he or she returns.

Client Timeout

Problem with players internet connection or internet service provider. While the client computer is alright, the internet of the client goes down and causes similar effects in how Arelith server views the problem. Server acts the same way, booting the player after timeout duration. Same problems exist (such as players character staying online).

Server Timeout

Problem with servers internet connection, either the direct router or up to internet service provider. This is similar to client timeout, but it affects the -entire- server. When internet connection goes down server side, every character stays online until timeout, which means that every character out in the wild is prone to assault from hostiles and other effects. This has been most common recently in Arelith.

Server Crash

Server has crashed as a result of strain, error or somesuch. It has numerous subtypes (such as database crashes), but this is actually the best crash for the player, since characters get disconnected instantly because server itself is gone and so you don't stay there, being hit by monsters or somesuch. Also, that is often easier to restore than internet connection related problems, either remotely by devs (as internet connection itself is alive) or by simply restarting the server manually.

Craftables do affect the Server Crash type, client logging on to the server affects both server crash and server timeout, though client activity crashing the router is less common than crashing the server. Note that some of the crashes are in fact temporary timeout crashes (and not crash-restarts as may look like), where entire server timeouts, but itself stays online and functioning. Once the connection stabilizes, server will be empty but players can log in again. This is evident when you log in and have the same wards on and are in the same location.
