First and foremost, subdual, while non-lethal, does not mean gentle. It is a violent action that can still potentially kill the target. It is not to be used to "friendly" slap somebody without killing them; it is not to be used for a higher-level character to throw their weigh around, just because they can; and generally, it is not to be used lightly. Attacking somebody, regardless of the intent, should be considered carefully.
Subdual can appear in many forms in Arelith, it doesn't have a set definition apart from that it does require actual violence. It would be appropriate to use in a barfight as an example, or spars outside of an arena. But the action in itself is violent, and will be seen no differently than attempting to kill an NPC or another player.

All the rules that apply to PvP apply to subdual as well. That means that you shouldn't cross and attack the same player within 24 real time hours, you should always RP and make clear your hostile intent, at least to the other player; you should have a valid reason other than your alignment to start the PvP, and you should always set your opponent as hostile before attacking.
Roleplay is required for a violent action against another player, so this does include subdual. Warning is not required for switching from subdual to standard lethal mode. However 24 hour rule applies if someone has a trip to the fugue, it is not activated by a character being subdued. If subdued the downed individual has the ability to -give up in order to force themselves into the fugue to begin the 24 hour rule protection.

If you wish to have a friendly spar and some tomfoolery, there are a few arenas within the modules where you may practice with little consequence other than the RP that you may bring with yourself. That does not mean that you cannot have a serious duel using subdual, but you should mind the rules if you do so outside an arena. If you are uncertain of your position, ask the other player through tells whether what you intend to do is fine by them.
Being defeated and reduced to subdual should be roleplayed appropriately. In the event that the character was barely spared from being alive, it is respectful for the defeated player to act with greivous injuries and difficulty rising, speaking, or retorting against their attackers.

To conquer and bring into subjection.

What is it

Subdual is a tool that allows non-lethal combat. A character that activates this mode attempts actively to end the fight destabilizing and knocking down his opponent, instead of aiming to kill. Note that all of this only works for player characters on player characters.

How does it work

After activating -subdual, a character will subdue player characters instead of killing them. This includes spells they cast and any summons, animal companions, or familiars they create.

A character that falls 'subdued' remain unconscious for 60 seconds.

Upon regaining consciousness, revived characters the following penalties for 5 minutes:

  • 100% Spell failure
  • Dexterity: Drops to 6.
  • Strength: A damage penalty is applied to drop the characters Strength damage to -2 rather than dropping Strength to 6 to allow the character to still move.
  • A penalty is applied to Dodge AC of -20.
  • Attack bonus reduction of -20 to -40. The range of the malus is dependant on any secondary positive increases to the characters AB.
    • Note: The character sheet will not reflect this but it is there and it will be reflected in the combat log

Giveup

If a player would rather die and pass on to the Fugue Plane as normal, they can enter the `-giveup` command while downed. That will cause them to die.

Unrelent and Lassoing

A character may try to use a lasso on a subdued PC to tie them for up to five minutes. The time decreases in relativity to the subdued character's Use Rope skill.

Players that don't wish to participate in capture RP may enable the -unrelent command to die in struggle against the ropes; though there is a 5% chance of surviving and successfully escaping the ropes. Note that this has to be activated before their character is roped, not after.

On the RP, rules and courtesy

Subdual can appear in many forms in Arelith, it doesn't have a set definition apart from that it does require actual violence. It would be appropriate to use in a barfight as an example, or spars outside of an arena. But the action in itself is violent, and will be seen no differently than attempting to kill an NPC or another player.

Being defeated and reduced to subdual should be roleplayed appropriately. In the event that the character was barely spared from being alive, it is respectful for the defeated player to act with greivous injuries and difficulty rising, speaking, or retorting against their attackers.

Communication is an important part of PVP both in the in character and out of character side of things. If you're unsure or want to be extra sure you can always try and ask. And if there is a concern, reach out to the DM Team and we'll help where we can and answer any questions had.
